Virgen del Carmen: 16th July 2019

On the 16th of July, like many villages and cities around Spain, Nerja celebrates the Day of Saint Carmen, Widow of the Sea. This event is especially important considering Nerja was, and still is a Fisherman’s town and many people in Nerja still work as fishermen.

The celebration begins with the Mass at the Church of El Salvador at 6:00 pm, accompanied by the Coro de la Peña Nerjeña. At 7:00pm at the door of the Church you will be able to enjoy some live music and dance from the Municipal Folkloric Group of Choirs and Dances. After this, there will be a procession through the streets of the old town of Nerja with Saint Carmen being carried on the shoulders of the Brotherhood bearers, accompanied by the Band of Music towards La Torrecilla Beach.

The procession will pass by the following streets: Puerta del Mar, Pintada, La Cruz, Ánimas, Granada, Plaza Cavana (where there will be more music), El Barrio and Castilla Pérez, until it reaches Torrecilla Beach. Once it has reached the beach the crew will embark her into a traditional fishing boat which will navigate along the coastline of Nerja finishing in Calahonda Beach before the Saint is taken back to El Salvador Church. To finish up this event you will be able to enjoy some amazing fireworks.
